Get Out Of Your Head And Into The Present Moment.

 
As a Melbourne hypnotherapist, I see a lot of my clients get so bogged down in the stresses of day to day living that they actually forget what we’re here on this Earth for; to be happy.

It seems like the only way we get that is if something really major happens to shake us up and wake us up. Personal or global crises tend to remind us of just how lucky we are to have what we have. Think about it; if you have a roof over your head and a job you’re doing pretty well compared to most of the world.

The problem is that most people tend to go into a kind of trance where they’re just living day to day, not really noticing what is going on around them. Sometimes we can even be lulled into a false sense of security; thinking or believing that bad things only happen to other people – not us.

Imagine if, in the blink of an eye, everything you had went up in smoke? The truth is, this could happen to any of us at any time; not necessary in a bushfire, but in any myriad of ways. The things we have will not be with us forever, and we cannot take them with us when we die. So why do we cling to these things as though they are the very meaning of life itself?

Why do we use our house, our car, our job and our social status to define our sense of self-worth?

The real things can’t be taken away from you; I’m talking about love, courage, compassion and wisdom. Those things are the real diamonds in a sea of cubic zirconia. So if we really can’t be sure what tomorrow will bring, shouldn’t we be making the most of what we have right now? Many people live their lives either worrying about the future or lamenting the past.

Think about it; when you sit down to enjoy a cup of coffee, do you really savour the moment? Or are you thinking about all the things you need to do after you finish your coffee?

It’s a common habit and one that many of us find it hard to break. On the other side of the coin, sometimes living in the ‘Now’ can be taken to the extreme. Have you ever heard the expression: ‘Eat, drink and be merry; tomorrow, we diet’?

Living for the moment can sometimes get us into trouble because if we live our lives every day as though we are going to die the very next day, we may just develop some habits that get us into strife if we do happen to live past tomorrow.

So what is the solution? A happy medium lies somewhere in between. Sometimes we have to live a little and other times we need to be more careful about our choices in life, especially when there are other people involved.

Whatever you are doing , ask yourself:

  • Is it hurting me?
  • Is it hurting other people?
  • Am I choosing out of love, courage, compassion or wisdom?
  • If not then what is a better alternative?
